On Father’s Day…

The Greatest Thing You'll Ever Leave Behind Isn't an Inheritance—It's an Example.

This Father's Day, Reflect on the Legacy You're Building

One of my main tenets in life is to strive to leave the world a better place because I have lived. The axiom “think globally, act locally,” has helped me to bring this concept into focus. As the decades roll by, I realize that any legacy that I will leave behind will be primarily through two areas. First, is the family tree, which is totally dependent on the role model that I am in the way that we raise our children. The second is through our good works, and particularly acts of charity — basically, good deeds.

The Importance of Kindness and Integrity

If I could leave an impression on our children, it would be that while self-sufficiency, comfort, and wealth are important, most of that will not be remembered after our time. It is the acts of kindness, the commitment to selfless acts of giving through a life of integrity, that have an opportunity to impact the greater community.

The Role of Spirituality

As for the search within, I have always believed that a well-grounded spirituality is absolutely essential to the human experience. I have never been as concerned with how a particular person expresses their religious belief, but rather that belief informs their actions toward others.

Appreciating Life and Opportunity

I also believe that every single one of us is monumentally fortunate to have the opportunity to live on this beautiful Earth. In my opinion, it would be a waste not to enjoy all of the experiences that we have been provided.

Caring for Family and Others

Of course, all of these thoughts and beliefs are tempered by the desire to take care of those whom I love. I have also taken on the opportunity to help people that I have the good fortune to serve. I personally believe that the family unit is essential to the best that is the culture of the United States.

Planning for the Future and Legacy

Each of us that are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to raise and provide for others in our immediate family need to protect ourselves and them by engaging in planning and documenting for the future of our families.

On Father’s Day, I am proud not only of the planning that I’ve done for the future of my family tree, but for all of those families that I have been honored to serve in preparing for their future and legacy.
